Part one of a three part illustration series.  The Mocking Bird Song is an Appalachian folk song, but also known in the United States as “Hush Little Baby”.  This song is thought to be an American song by many, as Mockingbirds are from the American continent, but the original author and date are either vague or unknown.  There are many version of The Mocking Bird Song floating around, below is one with the depiction of a mother singing the song to child.  In the book that I am illustrating, the song depicts a father “Papa” singing to child.

Hush, little baby, don’t say a word,
Mama’s gonna buy you a mockingbird.
If that mockingbird don’t sing,
Mama’s gonna buy you a diamond ring.
If that diamond ring gets broke,
Mama’s gonna buy you a billy goat.
If that billy goat won’t pull,
Mama’s gonna buy you a cart and bull.
If that cart and bull turn over,
Mama’s gonna buy you a dog named Rover.
If that dog named Rover won’t bark.
Mama’s gonna buy you a horse and cart.
If that horse and cart fall down,
You’ll still be the sweetest little baby in town.
